Elkhorn River: Bridge Closed Until Further Notice
Anonymous from South Carolina on 09/01/2018 07:24 PM:
Just finished riding from Neligh to O'Neill. There is an orange detour sign and another sign that says the "Cowboy Trail is closed until further notice" a few miles west of Neligh and before you get to Clearwater. The orange sign points you toward the highway, but that is the only signage for the detour! You have to guess how soon you can get off the busy highway and back on the trail. For riders not familiar with the area this is very frustrating.

Been there. Done that AND you are so right. We rode along trying to decide which 'first' turn to take. We took one and luckily it was the correct corner. Agree they need to provide a clear 'detour', off the highway back to trail.

About how far did you ride out of Neligh before getting back on the trail? I'm doing the entire trail in a couple of weeks and any info is helpful!

Cynthya from Salina, KS on 09/02/2018 01:37 PM:
We were riding from Clearwater to Neligh. Looks like the distance between the two is nine miles. We got detoured about two miles east of Clearwater. We rode maybe 3 on highway. So maybe 5-7 miles west of Neigh. Maybe that is some help???

Jim Powers from Baltimore on 09/04/2018 07:39 AM:
google earth clearly shows the bridges over the river are out just east of Clearwater. Looks like the north-south connectors too and from the highway are 517 Ave on the west side and 519 Ave (Royal road) on the west

Jim Powers from Baltimore on 09/04/2018 07:51 AM:
Sorry, 519 is on the east side of the trail outage.

The Google earth images show the river looks pretty wild through that stretch. Looks like it reclaimed a good portion of the trail

The trail is closed at Clearwater. The bridge over the Elkhorn river is out. The trai is wasted and overgrown.

Dana from Longmont, Co on 10/30/2015 03:02 PM:
Is the whole trail overgrown and wasted?

jan from St. Paul on 01/29/2016 12:02 PM:
im planning to walk this trail in june. is the trail completely out at clearwater? or detoured.

alex from lincoln on 02/04/2016 10:19 AM:
The trail is completely knocked out at clearwater, the bridge going over the elkhorn river is down. The "detour" is to walk on the shoulder of highway 275 (it's a nice 4' wide shoulder). You can see it on google earth if you look, it's just east of clearwater. I rode the trail in September with some friends and a couple guys actually crossed that at your own risk though, I think the water levels were low at the time. I hope you come out and hike the trail! I had a great time riding it last year. There are some cool things to check out in the towns it runs through.

I looked on google earth, and sure enough, the bridge is out. However, I noticed that the satellite image date is from March of 2012. Are you saying that 4 years later, and it's STILL not fixed? I'm planning to use my spring vacation (i'm a student at UNO) to backpack some of the trail; I guess i'll just use the highway for that portion.

Cynthya from Salina on 08/25/2017 12:09 PM:
Hello! We just finished biking Valentine to Norfolk and YEP! The bridge between Clearwater and Neligh is still OUT snd now it is 2017. You have to detour to the highway first least a couple miles.

Jo's market...A good little store; delicious cold milk! Friendly folks! Very close to the trail.
